Zur Ausstellung

In der Ausstellung B+LA+M, die im Rahmen des B-LA-M Festivals (www.b-la-m .org) stattfindet, treffen sich die Projekträume POIETO PROJECTS aus Los Angeles, Medialabmx aus Mexiko City und Kurt-Kurt aus Berlin. Sie präsentieren künstlerische Positionen, die stellvertretend für ihre Arbeit als Projektraum-Initiatorinnen, Kuratorinnen, Künstlerinnen und Brückenbauerinnen zwischen Kunst, Alltag, Nachbarschaft und sich ständig verändernden gesellschaftlich relevanten Themen stehen.

Medialabmx, POIETO PROJECTS und Kurt-Kurt verbindet das genaue Hinschauen und Hinterfragen unseres alltäglichen Handelns, das Ausgangspunkt und Motor für künstlerische Kooperationen, Interventionen und Multimedia-Installationen wird. Nicht abgehoben, sondern auf dem Boden und im Dialog mit Künstlerinnen und Künstlern, der Nachbarschaft und dem kunstspezifischen Publikum greifen sie lokal Themen auf, um sich ganz bewusst in der Community zu verorten, den Blick auf die Details vor Ort zu schärfen, aber auch die Perspektive nach und von Außen zu öffnen, um Kunst in einem größeren und internationalen Kontext wahrzunehmen und zu reflektieren. Die Veränderungen in der lokalen, nationalen und globalen Politik, in der Gesellschaft und in den Medien erfordern bisher nicht gekannte künstlerische Interventionen, Kooperationen und die Entwicklung von neuen Strategien. Diese gemeinsam während eines von der Kunst ausgehenden Dialogs zu erarbeiten und zu ergründen, Widerstände zu überwinden, Potentiale durch das Zusammentreffen von Künstlerinnen mit medien- und disziplinübergreifender Herkunft zu nutzen, ist Impulsgeber/ist das Ziel der gemeinsamen Ausstellung von POIETO PROJECTS, Medialabmx und Kurt-Kurt.

Respirar juntxs (Gemeinsam Atmen) ist ein partizipatives Kunstprojekt, das grundsätzliche Fragen des gemeinschaftlichen Lebens und Arbeitens aufgreift und in Metaphern des kollektiven Gehens und Atmens als einen potenziellen Weg für sozialen Wandel übersetzt. Im Zentrum des Projektes stehen gasmaskenähnliche Objekte, die normalerweise mit Krieg oder Gewalt assoziiert werden, hier aber durch ihre Hybridisierung mit einer Ästhetik, die von der zeitgenössischen lateinamerikanischen Kultur beeinflusst ist, neu definiert werden.

Ziel dieser konvivialen Geräte ist es, die Nachbarschaft zu aktivieren und in der Gesellschaft neue Wege des kollektiven Bewohnens der Stadt und der Aufrechterhaltung von Netzwerken der Fürsorge zu entwickeln.

Formal sind die zusammen mit Jugendlichen hergestellten Masken interaktive Klanggeräte, die beim Atmen der Nutzer*innen eine verstärkte gemeinsame Frequenz erzeugen, um die Atemzüge und die Körper aufeinander abzustimmen.

La has visto…? ist ein partizipatorisches Kunstwerk, das eine poetische Geste der Suche nach den abwesenden Compañeras (Kolleginnen/Freundinnen) thematisiert, die Opfer des gewaltsamen Verschwindens in Mexiko wurden. Die performative Arbeit geht von der Suche selbst aus, indem sie auf Ausdrücke und Gesten anspielt, die in den Suchprozessen nach den verschwundenen Opfern vorkommen. Auf diese Weise spielt sie auch auf das Problem der Gender-Perspektive an. Das Projekt besteht aus drei miteinander verknüpften Phasen: Erstens eine partizipatorische Phase, in der versucht wird, eine Vielzahl von Stimmen rund um die Frage La has visto…? in einer Skulptur bestehend aus unzähligen Stoffstreifen zusammenzubringen. In einem zweiten Teil wird die Skulptur zum interaktiven Textil-Interface, das die Streifen trägt und die Stimmen verstärkt. Und schließlich wird das elektronische Textil-Objekt in einer Reihe von Aktionen im öffentlichen Raum aktiviert und regt zu Interaktionen mit Menschen an.(GEWINNER DES ARS ELECTRONICA AWARD 2022)

Art Search betrachtet ML und Gesichtserkennung sowohl als Artefakte als auch als archäologische Werkzeuge. Mithilfe des phänotypischen Abgleichs untersucht das Projekt Verzerrungen in bestehenden Computer-Vision-Systemen wie DeepFace, während es weiterhin seine eigenen archivierten Trainingsdaten erstellt und bezieht.

Feminist AI arbeitet daran, Technologie in die Hände von Machern, Forschern, Denkern und Lernenden zu legen, um ungehörten Stimmen Gehör zu verschaffen und die KI für alle zugänglicher zu machen. Die Forschungs- und Designgruppe schafft Räume, in denen ungehörte Stimmen zusammenkommen können, um gemeinsam Technologie zu entwickeln, die von Kulturen, Identitäten und Erfahrungen geprägt ist. Sie beschäftigen sich mit intersektionellem Feminismus, um unsere Geschichten, Erfindungen, Designs und Führungsqualitäten ins Rampenlicht zu rücken und gemeinsam eine gerechtere Zukunft zu schaffen.

Transforming Transmissions (Sich wandelnde Übertragungen) ist eine interaktive Klangskulptur, die sich mit drängenden Themen wie Eigentum, Urheberrecht und Mitbestimmung auseinandersetzt. Dieses Projekt erforscht KI und Kommunikation durch die dynamische Entwicklung von Klängen auf ihrem Weg von der Übertragung zur Rezeption, die sich innerhalb eines generativen Klangsystems weiterentwickelt. Wie wird die Botschaft durch die Beteiligung des Publikums verzerrt und wie verändert sich dadurch unser Verständnis von Eigentum, Urheberrecht und Kreativität?
Die Sound-Installation besteht aus 6 Lautsprechern, die in einem Raum an einer großen Wand installiert werden.

Das Schaufenster des Projektraums Kurt-Kurt wird zum „Kino“, aber auch zum Display zwischen Innen und Außen, Kunstraum und öffentlichem Raum, Projekt und Nachbarschaft. Im Projektraum wird ein „Mini-Kino“ mit zwei Reihen Kinostühlen auf einem erhöhten Podest gebaut. Die Besucherinnen sitzen im Projektraum auf Kinostühlen und schauen durch das Schaufenster auf die Straße. Die Nachbarschaft und das reale Leben werden zum Film. Gleichzeitig findet die Tages-Schau aber auch statt, wenn die vorbeigehenden Menschen durch das Display in den Raum schauen. Die Betrachterinnen werden zu Betrachteten. So wird auch die Realität der Lübecker Straße zum filmischen Bild und vernetzt die Rückkoppelung von Nachbarschaft und lokalen, öffentlichen Themen mit globalen Erfahrungen miteinander.

Zu den Projekträumen

POIETO PROJECTS kultiviert Sympoiesis („Mitmachen“) und Ethos („Charakter“) auf lokaler Ebene in der Community und bringt Künstler, Forscher und Technologen zusammen, um sie mit Wissen und Werkzeugen auszustatten und so einen kreativen und verantwortungsvollen Umgang mit KI in der Zukunft zu gestalten. Der gemeinschaftliche und verbindende Ansatz ermöglicht lokales, privates Lernen, während er gleichzeitig eine gemeinsame Präsenz über physische Grenzen hinweg ermöglicht. Die daraus resultierenden Projekte heben die traditionellen Unterscheidungen zwischen Betrachter, Künstler und Kunstwerk auf und lösen die Grenzen zwischen Interaktion, Beteiligung und Autorenschaft auf.

Medialabmx ist ein Projektraum im Viertel La Merced in Mexiko-Stadt, der sich der Untersuchung und Erforschung der Verbindungen zwischen Kunst, Nachbarschaft, Technologie und Politik widmet. Seine Arbeit konzentriert sich auf die Nutzung neuer Medien und deren Überschneidungen mit Politik, Partizipation und den Bürgerinnen und Bürgern in direktem Austausch mit der Nachbarschaft.

Kurt-Kurt | Kunst und Kontext im Stadtlabor Moabit ist ein Kunstprojekt, das sich explizit mit exemplarisch ausgewählten Situationen im Stadtraum Moabit und in Berlin auseinandersetzt, sich ganz bewusst hier verortet und sowohl den Blick auf die Details vor Ort schärft wie auch den Blick nach und von Außen öffnet, um Kunst in einem größeren und internationalen Kontext wahrzunehmen und zu reflektieren. Kurt-Kurt untersucht, verfolgt und durchleuchtet Strategien und Entwicklungen in der Auseinandersetzung mit Öffentlichkeit und urbanem Raum. Die Interventionen und Präsentationen des Projekts Kurt-Kurt sind Ort für Austausch und Begegnungen zwischen Kunst und Alltag, Stadtraum und Projektraum, Modell und Realität und immer auch zwischen internationalem Kunstpublikum und Nachbarschaft/Anwohnern wie auch zwischen Künstlerinnen und Kunstrezipienten.

B-LA-M ist ein dreijähriger Kunstaustausch, der die Beziehungen zwischen den unabhängigen Kunstszenen von Berlin, Los Angeles und Mexiko-Stadt vertiefen soll. 54 Kunstkollektive werden zusammenkommen, um 18 gemeinsame Projekte in jeder Stadt zu entwickeln und zu realisieren.

Im Rahmen der berlinweiten Ausstellungen des B-LA-M Festivals werden weitere Vorführungen, Performances, Lesungen, Ausstellungstouren stattfinden, die ebenfalls das Ziel haben, aktuelle, global relevante Themen an die lokale Nachbarschaft anzubinden und mit dieser in einen konstruktiven Austausch zu kommen.

About the exhibition

The exhibition B+LA+M, which takes place as part of the B-LA-M Festival (www.b-la-m.org), brings together the project spaces POIETO PROJECTS from Los Angeles, Medialabmx from Mexico City and Kurt-Kurt from Berlin. They present artistic positions that are representative of their work as project space initiators, curators, artists and bridge builders between art, everyday life, neighborhood and constantly changing socially relevant topics.

Medialabmx, POIETO PROJECTS and Kurt-Kurt are united by the close observation and questioning of our everyday actions, which becomes the starting point and driving force for artistic collaborations, interventions and multimedia installations. Not detached, but on the ground and in dialog with artists, the neighborhood and the art-specific audience, they take up local issues in order to consciously locate themselves in the community, to sharpen the view of the details on site, but also to open the perspective to and from the outside in order to perceive and reflect on art in a larger and international context.
The changes in local, national and global politics, in society and in the media require unprecedented artistic interventions, collaborations and the development of new strategies. The aim of the joint exhibition by POIETO PROJECTS, Medialabmx and Kurt-Kurt is to develop and explore these together in a dialog based on art, to overcome resistance and to exploit potential by bringing together artists from different media and disciplines.

Respirar juntxs (Breathing Together) is a participatory art project that addresses fundamental questions of convival living and working and translates them into metaphors of collective walking and breathing as a potential path for social change. At the heart of the project are gas mask-like objects, normally associated with war or violence, but here redefined through their hybridization with an aesthetic influenced by contemporary Latin American culture.

The aim of these convivial devices is to activate the neighborhood and develop new ways of collectively inhabiting the city and maintaining networks of care in society.
Formally, the masks, made together with young people, are interactive sound devices that generate an amplified common frequency when users breathe in order to coordinate breaths and bodies.

La has visto…? is a participatory artwork that addresses a poetic gesture of searching for the absent compañeras (colleagues/friends) who were victims of forced disappearance in Mexico. The performative work is based on the search itself, alluding to expressions and gestures that occur in the search processes for the disappeared victims. In this way, it also alludes to the problem of the gender perspective. The project consists of three interlinked phases: First, a participatory phase in which an attempt is made to gather a multitude of voices around the question La has visto…? in a sculpture consisting of countless strips of fabric. In a second part, the sculpture becomes an interactive textile interface that carries the strips and amplifies the voices. And finally, the electronic textile object is activated in a series of actions in public space and encourages interaction with people.

Art Search frames ML and facial recognition as both artifacts and as archaeological tools. Using phenotypic matching the project explores bias in existing computer vision systems like DeepFace, while continuing to craft and source its own archival training data. Feminist AI works to put technology into the hands of makers, researchers, thinkers and learners to amplify unheard voices and create more accessible AI for all. The research and design group creates spaces where unheard voices can gather to build tech together that is informed by cultures, identities and experiences. They engage with intersectional feminism to spotlight our stories, inventions, designs and leadership, and to co-create more equitable futures.

Transforming Transmissions is a generative sound sculpture that addresses urgent issues such as ownership, copyright and co-determination. This project explores AI and communication through the dynamic evolution of sounds as they move from transmission to reception, evolving within a generative sound system. How is the message distorted by transmission and how does this change our understanding of ownership, copyright and creativity?

The shop window of the Kurt-Kurt project space becomes a „cinema“, but also a display between inside and outside, art space and public space, project and neighborhood. A „mini-cinema“ will be built in the project space with two rows of cinema chairs on a raised platform. Visitors sit on cinema chairs in the project space and look out through the shop window onto the street. The neighborhood and real life become a film. At the same time, the daytime show also takes place when people passing by look through the display into the room. The viewers become the viewed. In this way, the reality of Lübecker Straße also becomes a cinematic image and links the feedback of neighborhood and local, public issues with global experiences.

About the project spaces

POIETO PROJECTS cultivates sympoiesis („participation“) and ethos („character“) at the local level in the community and brings together artists, researchers and technologists to equip them with knowledge and tools to shape a creative and responsible approach to AI in the future. The collaborative and connective approach allows for local, private learning while enabling a shared presence across physical boundaries. The resulting projects break down the traditional distinctions between viewer, artist and artwork and dissolve the boundaries between interaction, participation and authorship.

Medialabmx is a project space in the La Merced neighborhood of Mexico City dedicated to investigating and exploring the connections between art, neighborhood, technology and politics. Its work focuses on the use of new media and its intersections with politics, participation and citizens in direct exchange with the neighborhood.

Kurt-Kurt | Kunst und Kontext im Stadtlabor Moabit is an art project that explicitly deals with exemplary selected situations in the urban space of Moabit and in Berlin, consciously locating itself here and sharpening the view of the details on site as well as opening the view to and from the outside in order to perceive and reflect on art in a larger and international context. Kurt-Kurt examines, pursues and illuminates strategies and developments in the examination of the public and urban space. The interventions and presentations of the Kurt-Kurt project are a place for exchange and encounter between art and everyday life, urban space and project space, model and reality and always also between international art audiences and neighborhoods/residents as well as between artists and art recipients.

B-LA-M is a three-year art exchange designed to deepen relationships between the independent art scenes of Berlin, Los Angeles and Mexico City. 54 art collectives will come together to develop and realize 18 collaborative projects in each city.
As part of the Berlin-wide exhibitions of the B-LA-M Festival, further screenings, performances, readings and exhibition tours will take place, also with the aim of connecting current, globally relevant topics to the local neighborhood and entering into a constructive exchange with it.
